Biogas Balloons

The BIOGAS BALLOON

One hour of labor for ten years of renewable energy.

The first environmental innovation BTR worked with: biogas balloons. Biogas balloons provide a zero-waste system that recycle food waste into LPG (cooking gas) for families, while producing fertilizer as a byproduct. Food waste is fermented with animal dung inside a polyester balloon and undergoes a process called methanogenesis, producing carbon dioxide and methane gas that can substitute for cooking gas. The gas is transferred directly from the balloon to a stove top through a hose, and has a use period of ten years.

Not only do biogas balloons reduce greenhouse gases emitted by organic matter in food waste, they also reduce people's spending on LPG gas, as well as increasing agricultural productivity through the fertilizer while getting rid of food waste.

BTR thus actively seeks to provide communities with this invaluable resource through fundraising and service trips to various communities in Thailand.
